Women's Liberation Movement Conference,
London
Issues: rape and other forms of violence
against women, classism in the WLM, lesbians
and child custody, autonomy and separatism,
and campaigns such as Women Against Racism
and Fascism. 2,500 to 3,000 women attend.
"The Need for Revolutionary Feminism"
by Sheila
Jeffreys (Scarlet Women Five:10) is
presented in a workshop. At the end of the
conference, many women leave calling themselves
Revolutionary
Feminists.
"It was massive
[...] it was the first time that there was
a women's band, a proper women's disco,
and we didn't take our clothes off, and
that was the end of that, and it was into
a new phase which I think was a shame, actually."
(Garthwaite, OHP Interview No. 7)
"The present
day feminist movement for the liberation
of women in this country is of late referred
to as the Women's movement' and the words
liberation, feminism, and radical, are more
and more omitted [...] by allowing the moderates
amongst us to formulate more acceptable
'requests' to replace our demands we are
denying ourselves and our sisters the possibility
of taking from men that which is ours by
right [...] nothing will be given to us
that is worth taking." (Dwek
1977: 3) |
